Ship observations
The Marine Meteorology and Oceanography Programme
WMO/World Weather Watch Programme (WWW)

Description

As a contribution to the World Weather Watch/Global Observing System, the network comprises more than 4000 Voluntary Observing Ships (VOS) making surface meteorological measurements, including about 1000 of them reporting on a daily basis; 20 ships participating in the Automated Shipboard Aerological Programme (ASAP) and providing about 6000 upper air soundings every year; 39 sub-surface temperature occupied frequently repeated and high density XBT ship lines from the Ship Of Opportunity Programme (SOOP).  All in situ components are coordinated with ocean satellite observations. These platforms are owned and operated by Members of WMO and Member States of IOC, and coordinated as part of a global operational system by JCOMM. Data quality monitoring is undertaken primarily by RSMC Exeter, UK (all marine data), the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (for ASAP data), Météo France, (for ASAP data) and the Marine Environmental Data Centre, Canada (for XBT data), as well as a number of operational meteorological and oceanographic centres participating in the quality control guidelines operated by the DBCP.

Details of buoy and float platforms are available through JCOMMOPS
